Polish Fire Exchange Student Visits
September, 2010
By:  Lt. Michael Magee, Public Information Officer
During the month of September the Bedford Park Fire Department was
awarded the honor of hosting a Fire Officer Candidate from the Main
School of the Fire Service in Warsaw, Poland. Bedford Park is one of 6
Fire Departments nationwide to be chosen for this exchange program.
Fire Officer Candidate Sylwia Marcinkowska arrived on September 3rd.
Fire Chief Sean Maloy and Operations Assistant Chief Jeff Clohessy
have created an itinerary for her to give the most well rounded
experience possible both culturally and Fire Service oriented. In addition
to living and working at Bedford Park Station #3 she has also spent time
at Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District and the Chicago Fire
Department. Her experiences thus far have given her time at Oak Lawn
Central Dispatch Center, the Safety City & Public Education programs at
the Schererville, Indiana Fire Department and the Illinois Fire Service
Institute learning about the facility and the training it provides as the
State Training Academy. During the visit she also observed a Building
Collapse Rescue operations course.
Sylvia is one of 6 Officer Candidates to be chosen for this program.  She is in
graduates she will hold a rank equivalent to a Fire Lieutenant. She will also have
a degree in Fire Engineering. The Polish Fire Service has been in existence since
graduation Sylvia will spend about 2 years rotating through various Rescue
Units (Fire Stations) before getting her permanent assignment with a
Fire/Rescue unit. When she graduates her shifts will be similar to ours - 24
hours on duty with 48 hours off. They respond to Emergency Medical calls
only on the request of the hospital based ambulance service. They provide
specialized training and Response Teams for Technical Rescue, Environmental
Hazards (Haz-Mat), Urban Search & Rescue and Dive Rescue and Recovery.
One main difference is that Emergency Medical calls are handled by hospital
based ambulance services. The rescue units only respond if called for. Their
medical training is limited to first aid. The Polish Fire Service consists of 499
Rescue Units supported by 335 District, 16 Provincial Headquarters, 5 different
Training Schools and 12 Hospitals. There are approximately 120,000 volunteers
throughout the country operating 3678 Volunteer Rescue Units.

Sylvia grew up in the town of Sanok, Poland. Her father is a retired District
Chief from the Polish National Fire Service. The Bedford Park Fire Department
was very happy to host Sylvia’s visit to the United States and did everything
possible to make Sylvia’s stay a skillful learning experience as well as a
pleasantly memorable one.
